Mountain جبل

In a dream it is a man of high standing, harsh, formidable, managing his affairs firmly; or a chief; or a child; or a merchant; or a difficult, harsh woman, if it is round and spread out; or worry; or distress; or the utmost aim of a person’s ambition; or a journey; or a covenant. If its interpretation is a king and it stands apart from other mountains, he is mightier. If it is a mountain on which plants grow and in which there is water, he is a king who has religion; and if there are neither plants nor water on it, he is an unbelieving, tyrannical king, because it is like a dead thing that glorifies God the Exalted but from which people derive no benefit. A mountain that stands and has not fallen is alive, and it is better than a fallen one; a fallen one that has turned into rocks is dead.

If a man sees that he is climbing a mountain, settles on top of it and drinks from its water: if he is fit for authority, he will be given a governorship by a mighty, hard-hearted but beneficial king; he will find wealth in proportion to what he drinks and the plants he sees, will attain his hope, his affairs will rise, and tyrants will submit to him. If he is a merchant, his affairs will rise. The ease of his climb is the ease of gaining that position without toil, and the difficulty of his climb is his toil in that position.

If he sees that he praised God the Exalted on it, he will be a just ruler; and if he behaves arrogantly on it, he will be a tyrant. If he prostrates to God the Exalted there, or calls the adhan, he will be given a governorship and will triumph over his enemy. If he comes down from it, he will lose his kingdom; if he is a governor, he will be dismissed; and if he is a merchant, he will lose and regret.

If he sees with him the ruler’s man and his soldiers, then the ruler is God the Exalted and His soldiers are the angels, and they are the victorious; so the dreamer will be victorious in that trade and will gain strength, triumph and piety.

If he sees that he climbed the mountain that is bare of plants, he will enter the service of the unbelieving king and will be struck by worry. A steep mountain pass (‘aqaba) is punishment (‘uqūba) and hardship; if he comes down from it, he will be saved; if he climbs onto it, it is elevation and authority along with toil. The rocks around the mountain and the trees are that king’s commanders, and they are harsh.

If he sees a stone around it, he will obtain leadership.

Whoever sees that he fell from a mountain will commit a sin and suffer harm to his body, or a person will slander him and he will suffer harm in proportion to what befell him, or he will fall from his rank and the condition he was in will change. If his leg breaks, he will fall out of favor with that king and be struck in his wealth.

If he sees that he climbed a mountain and when he reached halfway he stayed there, unable to climb up or come down, he will die at half of his life span, and one life span is forty years.

If he sees that he climbed it and sat on it, a sturdy child will be born to him. Every ascent is elevation and every descent is abasement. If ascending signifies worry, descending is a sign of relief; and wherever ascending signifies a governorship, descending is a sign of dismissal.

If he sees that the mountain burned or fell, a man of great importance will die, or a ruler will overpower and crush him, because fire is a ruler. If a mountain trembles and then becomes still, the king of that land will be struck by a calamity or hardship and then his affairs and those of the people of his kingdom will be set right. If he overpowers a mountain, he will overpower a man of great importance. If he leans on it, he will rely on a king of high importance. If he sits in its shade, he will live under his protection and find comfort in him.

If he sees that he carried a mountain and it was heavy for him, he will bear the burden of a mighty man or a great merchant that weighs on him; and if it is light, it will be light for him.

If he sees a mountain come down from the sky, the governor of that town will arrive; and if it rises up to the sky, he will be dismissed.

If he sees that he entered a cave in a mountain, he will be rightly guided in his affairs, take charge of a ruler’s affair and become established. If he enters a cavern, he will scheme against a king or a formidable man. If a mountain confronts him, he will be met by worry, a journey, a formidable harsh man, a difficult matter, or a difficult, unapproachable, harsh woman.

If he sees that he is being thrown from the mountain, he will be pelted with words.

If he sees on himself there a garment or a fine appearance, his authority will be stronger and more agreeable in proportion to the distance thrown and how far he flew from it.

If he sees that he climbed the mountain, the mountain is the utmost aim of his own ambition, which he will reach in proportion to how much of it he saw himself climb, until he settles on top of it, according to his climb. Every ascent a person sees on a mountain, a pass, a hill, a roof or anything else is the attainment of what he seeks in fulfilling the need he wants. It is also said that reaching the top with effort is hardship.

If he sees that he came down from a hill, a palace or a mountain, the matter he seeks will collapse and not come about.

Whoever sees a mountain from a distance will travel or be struck by worry. It is said that a mountain is a covenant. Ibn Sirin, may God the Exalted have mercy on him, said:

Whoever sees that he is on a mountain is disobedient (to his parents) and his appointed time has drawn near; and if he settles on top of the mountain, it is his death.

If he sees that he is on the foot of a mountain, he has time and longevity remaining.

If he sees that a mountain moved, the king of that land will travel.

It is said: whoever sees that he is climbing a mountain will gain power and elevation.

Whoever sees one of the mountains will obtain good and blessing.

Whoever sees as if the mountains quaked and then became still, a severe terror will enter that town, and then God the Exalted will grant its people security from their fear.

Whoever sees trees on a mountain will gain prestige, elevation, honor, and renown or fame among people.

Whoever sees as if the chiefs gathered on a summit, they will die in that town rather than its common people, or in one of its quarters; or grief will reach them because they asked God the Exalted for something reprehensible. Mountains and hills in a dream signify severe grief, fright, turmoil and unemployment; for slaves, for those who used to do evil, and for the wicked, they signify punishment and harm; and for the rich, losses.

Whoever sees as if he swallowed a mountain more than five hundred parasangs long, strong, mighty men will come under his hand, obey him, and he will carry out among them whatever he wishes.

Whoever sees as if he is climbing a steep pass toward a spacious place will free slaves, take in orphans, or nurse the sick and treat them kindly.

Whoever sees as if he entered a cavern will obtain security, reliance on God the Exalted, and tranquility. Sometimes a mountain signifies the anchorage in which a ship is held fast with those aboard it. Sometimes a mountain signifies one who gives a person shelter, under whose shade he takes cover and by whom he is protected, such as a master or a child. A person’s good and evil are inferred from the water, trees and fruit on the mountain, or from its height and lack of good. A mountain signifies a promise. Sometimes a mountain and its moving in a dream signify hardship and fear. Sometimes a mountain signifies drowning for one traveling by sea.

If he sees that the mountain has towered up and become like a canopy, it signifies the occurrence of something that warrants punishment.

If he sees that he went up the mountain and found sweet water and fruit on it, or something people live on, he will be protected through a virtuous wife, or learn knowledge that saves him from ignorance, or learn a trade in which he will be given good fortune, or attain a position, or make a beneficial journey, or serve a ruler, or be given a promise whose outcome is good. If he went up the mountain by a straight path, he approaches things in the proper way. Consider which mountain he climbed: if it is a noble mountain such as Mount ‘Arafat, Mount Qāf, Mount Jūdī, Mount Uhud, Mount Lebanon, Mount Qāsiyūn, Mount Muqaṭṭam and the like, he will strive in the service of masters among the scholars and the righteous, and he may travel to that region and reach his goal.

If he sees that the mountain has been leveled, the one on whom the mountain was leveled will die or be dismissed; and sometimes the dreamer will attain humility and piety. Mountains signify kings, princes, the righteous and scholars; sometimes a mountain signifies a man of religion and worldly means. Whoever digs a well in a mountain or moves stones from it to another place will contend with a hard-hearted person and attempt a correct matter, with hardship and toil.

If he sees the mountains moving with him, it signifies the outbreak of a war in which kings march against one another, or disagreement or turmoil among the scholars of the land during a period of strife and hardship in which the common people perish; it may also signify justice in that place.

Whoever sees in a dream that he fled from a ship to a mountain will be ruined and perish, because of the story of Noah’s son, peace be upon Noah; or he will oppose the view of the community and go his own way in whims and innovation. Sometimes his falling from the mountain signifies falling into sins, debauchery, strife and ruin, if he falls toward wild beasts, crows, snakes, kinds of mice, filth and foul mud. It may instead signify abandoning sins and giving up innovations, if his flight is from such things, or if his fall is from a mosque or a garden, or toward taking up the Quran, or toward praying in congregation and the like. If the mountain rises into the air above the heads of the people, it is a severe fear that will hang over the people from the direction of the ruler, because the mountain was raised above the Children of Israel like a canopy as a warning from God the Exalted to them and a threat against disobedience. The moving of a mountain may signify plague. As for the mountain turning into foam, ashes or dust, there is no good in it for whomever the mountain signifies, neither in his life nor in his religion.

Whoever sees that he is standing on a mountain will rely on an important man through whom he will gain honor, good and status.

Whoever sees that he is clinging to a man (on a mountain), likewise.

Whoever sees that he demolished a mountain will destroy a man in proportion to the mountain; it is also said that a life will be torn down.

Whoever sees that he threw himself from the mountain, his letters and his words will take effect with a ruler.

Whoever sees that he is on a mountain or climbing a mountain with a sword in his hand, or wearing armor, or being clothed with a garment there, or with the ruler’s man, will gain authority or obtain good and elevation.

Whoever sees that he wants to climb the mountain wants to flatter a hard-hearted man of far-reaching ambition, or wants something; the mountain is then the utmost aim in his soul, which he will reach in proportion to how much of it he saw himself climb until he settled on top of it, and according to how hard or easy it was for him. When he settles on top of it, he will attain from it the utmost of his hope and the wish he cherished.

Whoever sees that he bathed from it, God the Exalted will grant him great dominion, or he will become connected with a great king. If he is grieved, he will be relieved; if in debt, his debt will be paid; if sorrowful, his sorrow will be consoled; if a captive, he will be freed; if poor, God the Exalted will make him rich; if a scholar, his knowledge will increase; and if a slave, he will be freed. Sometimes the Amu Darya (Jayḥūn) signifies the lands of the Persians and that region; whoever drinks from it, it signifies that he will obtain a benefit and a gift from that region.
