In a dream, if their number is known, fish are women; if it is not known and they are many, they are money taken as spoils.

(Whoever sees) at the bottom of the sea or a river large, fresh fish gathered together, and sees that he is taking them out however he wishes, or eating them, or dividing them, will gain much booty of money in proportion to what he took out of those fish and what he did with them in his dream — eating, dividing or storing. The whale is the king's minister, because the sea is the king and the fish are the king's soldiers. If the fish is alive and fresh, he will obtain a virgin slave girl. Many fish are an unwelcome booty and much money from the king's direction, for which he fears being called to account and having it taken.

(Whoever sees) that he is catching fish in a murky container, there is no good in it however he sees it. If he sees that he is catching fish in water, he will hear words that make him happy.

(Whoever sees) that he is catching large fish, that signifies benefit and good. One who catches small fish, that signifies the departure of pleasure and benefit. Soft-scaled fish is a good sign for one who intends deception, so that his affair stays hidden and he takes people's money by cunning; for the rest of people it signifies their affairs becoming complicated and slow, and the slowness and slackness of works. The fish called bunni is a good sign for one who wants to go into partnership with another. Fish without scales, and every long fish of that kind, signify vain works, toil and hope for what will not be completed, because they slip out of the hands. Fish found in springs are a sign of a little good. If a person sees dead fish inside the sea, it is a bad sign, and in particular it signifies a hope that will not be fulfilled.

(Whoever sees) live fish and sees that he takes it out of the water or elsewhere and eats it, it is a sign of benefit.

(Whoever sees) a fish in his bed, it is a bad sign for one who travels by sea and for one who is sick: the sea traveler will meet hardship, and the sick person's pain will grow worse from dampness. Whoever caught fish from murky water will be struck by severe worry.

(Whoever sees) that he is eating live fish will attain kingship. If he sees that he is catching fish from clear water, he will be granted provision, and if a child is born to him, he will be fortunate. Salted fish is grief from kings.

(Whoever sees) that he is eating salted fish will suffer toil and hardship. It is also said that if the fish number four, they are women, and if more than four, they are spoils and wealth. If he sees a fish in his bed while traveling by sea, it signifies hardship and drowning is feared for him, because it lay with him. Salted fish signifies good and lasting wealth, because salt preserves fish from spoiling; it is also said that it is worry coming from slaves.

Fried fish signifies the answering of a prayer. It is also said that grilled fish is a journey in search of knowledge. Large fish are wealth and spoils, and small ones are worries, because they have more bones than flesh and are hard on the one who eats them. If he sees fish among which are large and small ones, there is nothing wrong with it, and it signifies provision. Whoever takes some of the fish will obtain something from the king's soldiers. A huge fish, if it is caught, the rebel and insurgent will perish.

(Whoever sees) that he is buying a fish from the fishmonger will buy a slave girl or marry a woman.

(Whoever sees) that he sought a large fish (in a pond) or a pool and it slipped away from him, his debtor wants to deny his money, and he will not be able to get it except through a fierce dispute.

(Whoever sees) a large fish in a basin or a pool with its mouth open, it is a prison for him.

(Whoever sees) that he found in the belly of a fish one, two or more pearls will obtain money from a woman, or will have a boy, or two or more sons, according to the number of pearls. If he found a ring in its belly, it is power for the dreamer and honor that returns to him.

Whoever obtains a fish and finds fat in its belly will obtain a woman and gain money and good from her. Catching fish on land is committing an indecency; it is also said it is pleasing good. Whoever catches fish with bones and scales, it is stored silver or gold on which a right of God Most High is due, because it is not lawful or pleasant to eat except after removing what is to be removed from it, so it is like the zakat on wealth, which is not good for its owner except by paying its zakat. If the fish has weapons (spines), it signifies his victory over his enemies; or he may befriend people of evil. If it is of a kind that cannot be (eaten), it is merchandise for merchants. If the fish moves from the fresh sea to the salt sea, and the salt-sea fish moves to the fresh, it signifies dissension in the army, or the common people differing over what had become customary, through the occurrence of an injustice or the appearance of an innovation. If he sees fish floating on the surface of the water, it signifies the easing of affairs, the nearing of what is far, the disclosure of secrets, and the bringing out of hidden things, or of property with a basis in inheritance. If he sees small or large fish with him, it signifies concern with joys and sorrows, or with what calls for gathering, good and bad. If he sees with him fish resembling the form of a human or a bird, it signifies becoming acquainted with merchants and those who travel back and forth by land and sea, or interpreters who know languages, or those of pleasing character; this is judged by the resemblance: if it resembles something good, the character is good, and if the resemblance is bad, the character is bad. If he sees with him something people become fond of or that is raised in houses, like the lajat and the catfish (qarmut), it is a sign of kindness to orphans or strangers and giving them shelter. If he sees that he took fish from the bottom of the sea, he may become highly skilled in his craft and obtain great provision; otherwise he will meddle with the wealth of sultans or become a spy. If the sea was laid bare and he took fish or jewels from it, he will become acquainted with knowledge from the unseen of God Most High, religion will become clear to him, he will be guided to the way, and the outcome of his affair in that will be a good outcome. If the fish went back from him into the sea, he will keep company with the saints and learn from them what no one else has learned. If he intends to travel, he will find companions who accompany him, he will benefit from them, and return to his place safely. If he sees in a dream a fish resembling an island, he will be given spoils through holy war with a righteous commander, especially if he took oil from its eye or ate of its flesh. If he finds fish on the ground, it signifies that his earning will move from sea travel to land travel; if not, he will secure his wealth and keep track of his goods, or reunite his family and relatives. Every fish that signifies a human being — seeing it is a sign of a livelihood from water, such as water-carriers, sailors, divers, swimmers and bathhouse attendants. If grilled fish came down to him from the sky, it is glad tidings that his prayer will be answered, of his victory over his enemies and the rise of his standing. Seeing fish may signify worry, misery, illness, bad news and death in the place where it is in the dream, because of its smell, its burden and the departure of its life.
