Scribe (writer) كاتب

In a dream he is a cunning man. If a scribe sees that he is illiterate, his cunning, or his mind, or his religion will go, or he will become poor. If he sees that he is illiterate and has become a scribe, he will obtain good management and a ruse against whoever plots against him. If he sees that his handwriting is bad, he will repent and abandon tricking people [the source reads "rope", a copyist's slip for "tricks"]. If a person sees that he is a scribe, it signifies that he will busy himself with the affairs of others, not his own, and will suffer much toil from that without gaining any benefit from it. In the sick this dream signifies death, and in a slave it signifies his trustworthiness and righteousness and that he will become the steward of the household. The scribe is one of fine craft, like the cobbler: the pen is like the awl and the needle, and the ink is like what he sews with of thread and thongs. And [he is] like the cupper: his pen is his lancet and his ink is the blood. And like the embroiderer, the darner and the like. He may also signify the ploughman: the pen is like the ploughshare and the ink like the seed. The king's scribes: seeing them in a dream, or turning into one of them, is a sign of elevation of rank and improvement of one's state. If the king's scribes turn to shabbiness, or to being scribes on the roadsides, it signifies a lowering of rank and a bad state, just as seeing them in a fine condition signifies good. Chancery scribes: seeing them signifies glory, elevation, fulfilment of needs, connection with kings and men of state, knowledge, understanding, eloquence, provisions, gains, spouses, children, fathers and slaves. Secretaries of state secrets: seeing them signifies arriving news, increase and decrease, and the settling of affairs, and becoming acquainted with hidden secrets. The roadside scribe: seeing him signifies a policeman or a cupper. Seeing the Noble Scribes [the recording angels] is glad tidings and ease in this world and the Hereafter, and his end will be sealed with Paradise if he is God-fearing; if he is otherwise, let him beware of the saying of God the Exalted:

كِرَامًا كَـٰتِبِينَ ۝ يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ

“Noble and recording; They know whatever you do.”
