Fragrant herbs in dreams differ according to their scent and whether they are taken to be smelled or otherwise. Seeing or smelling fragrant herbs in a dream signifies relief from worries and troubles, righteous deeds and a true promise. If a dead person gives a living person fragrant herbs, or he is seen with them, it signifies that he is in Paradise. For an unmarried man, basil is his wife; for a married man, a child, or knowledge by which he becomes known, or fine praise. Basil being brought in to a person in a dream may signify worries and trouble, and it may signify illness, because it is carried to the sick. The combination of water and greenery in a dream is a sign of the departure of worries. There is no good in seeing hamahim [a kind of basil] when it is brought in to a sick person, for it signifies his death, because from it come hamam [death] and humma [fever] [wordplay]. Likewise all fragrant herbs [rayahin] signify the nearness of the hin, which is death [wordplay], and they may signify plague. Thyme-like basil signifies some writing a person needs, and it may signify the first appearance of hair on the cheeks. Basil, if it is growing in its proper place, is good repute and pleasing speech, and the stem of basil is a male child.
(Whoever sees) on his head a wreath of basil will be dismissed if he is a governor. The seller of fragrant herbs is a man of worries, because they do not last. All fragrant herbs, when seen cut, signify worry and sorrow; when seen in their places [growing], they signify comfort, or a child, or a spouse.
(Whoever sees) a sprig of basil raised up to the sky from some region of the earth, that is the death of the scholar of that region. Basil signifies a child only when it is growing in the garden; it signifies a woman when gathered in a bundle; and it signifies a calamity when it is cut and thrown somewhere other than its place, if it has no scent. It is also said that basil is a blessing. Basil is a woman: its beauty is her beauty, its scent is his love for her and his delight in her, and its freshness is his spending on her. If basil is seen spread out in a man's house, it is praise of him. If basil without scent is handed to him, it is a calamity. If a person throws basil at another person and he catches it, the one who catches it will be touched by sorrow concerning what is between them.
(Whoever sees) someone else sitting in a mosque with basil around him, that is people backbiting him and saying things about him that are not in him.
