City (cities and lands) مدينة من المدائن

Whoever sees in a dream that he entered one of the cities will be safe from what he fears. Ibn Sirin (may God Most High have mercy on him) liked entering cities and disliked leaving them, because of His saying, the Exalted:

فَخَرَجَ مِنْهَا خَآئِفًا يَتَرَقَّبُ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ نَجِّنِى مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

“So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."”

Quran 28:21 · Saheeh International

It is said the city is interpreted as a learned man, because of his saying (God bless him and grant him peace): “I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate.” Whoever enters a city and finds it in ruins, its scholars have been lost. It is also said the [ruined] city is the death of its king, or darkness [or injustice] in it.

(Whoever sees) a city being built up, scholars will multiply in it and their sons will keep to their fathers' path. Any city that is seen with no ruler in it, food will become expensive there. An unknown city is the Hereafter, and a known one is this world for the one who sees it, or the religion of its people. Whoever sees a known city demolished, or partly demolished, the religion of its people has gone, and their worldly life may go through a calamity in their religion. The best of cities in interpretation is the large, flourishing city, especially if it is larger than the cities in which he lives. A person's city to which he is attributed is interpreted as his father: whoever sees that a city was ruined by an earthquake, his father will die by being killed.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the upper lands of the Arabs, his yield will increase; or in the lower lands of the Arabs, his cunning and scheming will increase.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the lands of Lower Upper-Egypt, his life will be troubled and he will be wretched in his time; or in the lands of the highest Upper-Egypt, his trustworthiness will increase and his tongue will be truthful.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the land of Nubia will be granted a vast blessing.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the land of al-Arish, his good and his blessings will increase.

(Whoever sees) that he is in Constantinople will lose in his wealth.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the lands of Jerusalem and Mount Sinai, it is a year approaching him [of good]. If he sees that he is in Bethlehem, al-Barqa and al-Khawlan, his prayer will increase and his religion will grow.

(Whoever sees) that he is on the lower mountain will meet a beloved.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the lands of the East will attain great good.

(Whoever sees) that he looked down over Baghdad will be brought before a judge, because Baghdad is the seat of the imam under whose obedience every judge stands. Every land in which there is intense heat and cold, that is an affliction that befalls its people.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the mountain of Hebron, the Jordan and Lake Tiberias will undertake a journey or suffer humiliation.

(Whoever sees) that he is in Damascus, God Most High will grant him much good and blessing.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the coastal lands will be granted acceptance among people.

(Whoever sees) that he is in open land and a desolate, rain-fed waste will be struck in his wealth.

(Whoever sees) that he is in the land of the Khazars will fall ill.

(Whoever sees) that he is in a ruin with no white [dwelling] and no people in it will be tried by a people he cannot withstand.

(Whoever sees) that he is among monasteries will obtain provision with toil.

(Whoever sees) that he is in salty ground or sulphurous ground will fall ill.

(Whoever sees) that he is in a flourishing land full of people will be granted blessing with generosity from where he does not expect. Whoever enters a city in a dream, it indicates peace between him and people who call him to the truth. If he enters a palace in it, and he is a ruler, he will be overcome.

(Whoever sees) that he entered an ancient city, long ruined, its houses demolished, and people came and dug out the foundations of its houses and built them more solidly than they had been of old, there will appear, or be born there, a scholar, or an imam who renews religion [or: a scholar of hadith], in piety and devotion. If he sees a fertile city with good crops, it is the good state of its people. A land [balad] is an oath, because of His saying, the Exalted:

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَـٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ

“I swear by this city [i.e., Makkah]”

Quran 90:1 · Saheeh International

A land is safety from fear. The garrison city [misr, also Egypt] indicates safety from fear and meeting loved ones; seeing the believers among the people of Egypt indicates attaining hopes and good news. Seeing Badr indicates victory over enemies, because of His saying, the Exalted:

وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ وَأَنتُمْ أَذِلَّةٌ ۖ فَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ

“And already had Allāh given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were weak [i.e., few in number]. Then fear Allāh; perhaps you will be grateful.”

Quran 3:123 · Saheeh International

Seeing Hunayn indicates relief after hardship. Staying in Syria [al-Sham] is blessing and good for one who is in hardship, though seeing it may indicate strife [fitna]; likewise if he sees himself in the East. If he sees himself in Yemen, he will be safe from what he fears and his faith will increase. The lands of the West [the Maghrib] are honor, knowledge and high standing. Iram of the Pillars signifies whatever good it had [i.e. according to it]. Likewise the cities whose people God caused to be swallowed by the earth: they indicate fear, anxiety and cheating in measure and weight. A land in a dream may indicate repentance and forgiveness. A region in a dream is honor, elevation and wealth; a region may indicate its governor, its ruler, its judge or its scholar, or what is imported from it. If in a dream he owns a land or rules over it, he will attain kingship, a governorship or a position according to his worth and what befits him. If he is unmarried, he will marry; if sick, he will recover from his sickness; if a sinner, he will repent; if astray, he will be guided. If a dead person is seen in a dream in a city, he may be in Paradise sharing with the people of bliss, just as if he were seen in a farming estate, it would indicate that he is in the Fire, because of the toil, wretchedness, lack of comfort and heedlessness of its people. A city may indicate amusement and preoccupation with worldly matters. If the city has a good name, such as Sana'a, it indicates favor done [istina']; or Madinat al-Tayyib, it indicates good [tayyib] news; or Zafar, from victory [zafar] over the enemy; and Surra Man Ra'a [Samarra, literally ‘he who sees it rejoices’], from joy. The lands of Isfahan in a dream indicate evil and troubles from the direction of the Jews, and seeing them may indicate the musical mode that bears that name among those who know it. The Hijaz in a dream may indicate faith. Whoever in a dream goes out from Baghiya [‘wrongdoer’] to the city of Misr will be saved from wrongdoing, attain his request and be safe from his fear. If he goes out from Surra Man Ra'a to Khurasan, he moves from joy to an evil whose time has come [play on khur-san]. Likewise one who leaves al-Mahdiyya [‘the guided’] and enters Susa [sū' = evil] is leaving guidance and truth for evil and corruption, along these lines; and the same method applies to all known villages and cities. The gates of a known city are its governors, its judges and those who guard and protect it, and its houses are its leading people.

(Whoever sees) that he is in an unknown city that he does not recognize, that is a sign of the righteous, and he may attain what he asked for.

(Whoever sees) that he is entering a city, and he had entered it, will not die until he enters it; it may be safety from fear, and he may see someone from that city who will tell him about it and its people.

(Whoever sees) the city wall demolished, its governor will die or be dismissed from his post.

(Whoever sees) that a breach has opened in the city wall so that a lion, a flood or a thief entered the city, Islam will weaken in it or the market of knowledge will slacken.
