River نهر

In a dream it is a man of great standing. Whoever enters it will mix with a man of the most eminent people. Drinking from a river is not praiseworthy, because of His saying, the Exalted:

“And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allāh will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allāh said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the patient."”

Quran 2:249 · Saheeh International

(to the end of) the verse.

Whoever sees that he leapt from a river to the other bank will be saved from worry and distress and will be given victory over his enemy. It is said that a river signifies travel for one who enters it, and it is said that entering it is entering the service of the ruler. If the water flows in a marketplace and the people are performing ablution from it and benefiting from its water, that is justice from the ruler toward his subjects. If it flows over the rooftops, comes down into the houses and wets people’s goods, that is tyranny from the ruler toward his subjects, or an enemy who oppresses the people.

Whoever sees a river come out of his house without harming anyone, that is kindness that will come from him to the people.

Whoever sees that he has become a river will die of a hemorrhage, or will be stung (or bitten). Whoever enters a river will become intimate with an important man; if mud from it gets on him, worry and fear will reach him from that man, and likewise if the river is turbid and muddy. If he drinks from its water while it is clear, he will receive good and a pleasant life from that man in proportion to what he drank.

Whoever sees that he is drawing water from it will obtain wealth from a man in proportion to the greatness or smallness of the river.

Whoever sees that he crossed the river to the other side will get past worry, distress and fear, if there was mud, clay or successive waves in it; otherwise he will cut off the man he associates with and move on from him to someone else.

Whoever sees that he leapt from the river onto its bank will be saved from the ruler’s evil and will gain victory over enemies. If he sees that the river’s water snatches him, or some of his animals or belongings, and carries it away, that is harm and loss for him. If he sees that he is making a clear river flow to his house, it signifies prosperity and wealth; it is said that for a rich man it is income he will receive and benefit for his household. If he sees a river flowing from his house and people drinking from it: if he is rich or a man of honor, it signifies good and benefits for the people of the town, whom he will treat generously and spend on, and many people who need him will come to his home and obtain benefit from him. A river in a dream is a righteous deed or continuous provision. A turbid or foul-smelling river is a sign of Hell and the evil that leads close to it. A river is a trial (fitna). A river signifies its own region, such as the Syr Darya, the Amu Darya, the Euphrates and the Nile. Sometimes (the river) al-‘Āṣī (the Orontes) means, for the one who sees it, disobedience (‘iṣyān); (the river) Baradā is seen as coolness and peace (bard wa-salām); (the river) Yazīd brings an increase (ziyāda) in provision; and the Dijla (Tigris) is earnestness (jidd). Whoever drinks from these rivers or others like them that are famous in his land, it signifies good, provision and benefit, or a wife, or a gift from that region. If the river is in a land other than its own, it signifies a change of governments, disputes between kings, and some of them marching against others.

Whoever sees that he is walking on the water of a river, it signifies his good intention and the soundness of his certainty of faith. The river of al-Kawthar in a dream is victory over enemies, because of His saying, the Exalted:

إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ

“Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muḥammad], al-Kawthar.”

Quran 108:1 · Saheeh International

(to the end of) the verse. Whoever drinks from the river of al-Kawthar will obtain knowledge, good deeds, sound certainty, and adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. If he is an unbeliever, he will embrace Islam; or if a sinner, he will repent and move from innovation to the Sunnah, or from a wicked wife to a righteous wife, or from unlawful earnings to lawful earnings. The river of water that is in Paradise is a sign of provision; the river of milk is a sign of the pure natural faith (fiṭra); the river of wine is a sign of intoxication with the love of God the Exalted and of lowering one’s gaze from what He has forbidden; and the river of honey is a sign of knowledge and the Quran.
