In a dream he is a man who does hidden works by which he embellishes; a reformer and a corrupter, like the hypocrite, the show-off, the affected flatterer, the fraud, the praiser and the extoller. The soundness or corruption of his work, its benefit and harm, are inferred from the quality of his painting, its evenness and its suiting the thing painted, and from the place in which he does that. [Consider] the paint and what is drawn in it of writing and pictures: whatever is Quran or words of piety is sound; whatever is pictures or false poetry is corrupt. Seeing the painter signifies flattery, one who embellishes speech, breaks promises and lies in what he says. It may signify honor and authority.
