In a dream it is the state of a man in his religion, because of his saying, may God bless him and grant him peace: "Fear God regarding these hidden secrets, for no one keeps a hidden secret but God clothes him in its cloak: if good, then good, and if evil, then evil."
Whoever sees that he wore a turban on his foot or a shoe on his head, misfortunes will befall him. Garments with masculine names are men and those with feminine names are women, for the most part. For one who sees himself wearing them in a dream, new clothes are better than old ones, unless they point to trouble. Women's clothing on unmarried men is women, in proportion to the clothing, and men's clothing on women likewise. Visiting clothes [formal garments worn to call on people] are hardship, or reunion with an absent person, or marriage for an unmarried man. The clothing of kings, viziers or princes is honor and elevation. The clothing of soldiers is war. The clothing of scholars is knowledge and practice. The clothing of Sufis is renunciation and piety. The clothing of tradesmen is toil and fatigue, or unemployment if their clothing in the dream is fine, because they only wear such things when they are idle. White clothing is dignity, gravity and pride. Silk clothing is honor, elevation and office; if it is on a dead person, it is of the silk of Paradise. Clothing overlaid with gold is victory over enemies. Black clothing is lordship [sudad, playing on aswad, "black"] and elevation. Green clothing is martyrdom, because it is the clothing of the people of Paradise; He the Exalted said:
عَـٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوٓا۟ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًا
“Upon them [i.e., the inhabitants] will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink.”
Quran 76:21 · Saheeh International
Cotton clothing is the Sunna. Woolen clothing [suf] is purity [safa'], unless it is coarse and unbefitting its wearer, in which case it is poverty and humiliation. Linen clothing is blessing. Embroidered clothing is a splendid letter, eminence, and joy over wealth or a child. Clothing that is too long for its wearer is disobedience. Short clothing, for one it befits, is chastity and purity; He the Exalted said:
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
“And your clothing purify.”
Quran 74:4 · Saheeh International
