Bathhouse (Hammam) حمام

A bathhouse in a dream signifies a house of harm. Whoever enters it will be struck by a passing worry coming from women, because the bathhouse is a place of sins. The name hammam is derived from hamim (hot water; also a close relative), so it signifies fever (humma) or a relative. If he uses hot water in it, (harm) will come to him from women or through illness. It is also said that washing with hot water is good because it is in the bathhouse. If he is grieved and enters the bathhouse, he will come out of his grief. If he builds a bathhouse, he will commit indecency, it will spread about him, he will indulge in it and pry into people's private matters. If the bathhouse is pleasantly warm, his family, his in-laws and his wife's relatives will be agreeable to him, helpful and caring. If it is cold, they will not associate with him and he will get no benefit from them. If it is extremely hot, they will be harsh-natured and he will see no joy because of their harshness.

(If he sees) that he is in the hot room, the water has swelled up from its channel, and he wants to block it but it will not be blocked, a man will betray him with his wife and he will strive to stop him but will not manage it. If the basin fills and the water runs from the hot room to the middle room, he will become angry with his wife. If the bathhouse is taken to stand for the comforts of worldly life: if it is cold, the dreamer is poor, of little earning, and his hand will not reach what he wants; if it is pleasantly warm and he enjoys it, his affairs will go as he loves, he will be a good earner with power in which he sees joy and happiness; and if it is extremely hot, he will be a good earner but will have no sound management or tact, no praise among people, and no splendor or renown for his wealth.

(Whoever sees) that he entered a bathhouse, it is a sign of an intermittent fever.

(Whoever sees) that in the hot room he drank heated water, or had it poured over him, or washed with it other than in the manner of a ritual bath, it is grief, illness and fright from the jinn, in proportion to the heat of the water. If he drank it from the middle room, it is a severe fever; and if he drank it from the cold room, it is pleurisy (birsam, a feverish delirium).

(If he sees) that he washed with cold water, it is his recovery. When the bathhouse, washing and depilatory paste (nura) come together, take the washing and the paste and leave the bathhouse, for they are stronger in interpretation.

(If he sees) an unknown bathhouse in that neighborhood, there is a woman there whom people visit (for immorality).

(Whoever sees) that he is washing in the bathhouse will be struck by grief from his enemy, and he may fall ill.

(Whoever sees) that he is building a bathhouse, his need will be fulfilled. The bathhouse signifies Hell, and the bathhouse attendant signifies its keeper. It signifies the house of a judge, and its attendant is the judge (qadi). It signifies a woman, and its attendant is her husband or the one who contracted her marriage. It signifies prison, and its attendant is the jailer. It signifies the sea, and its attendant is the ship's captain and manager. The bathhouse may also signify the houses of people of evil, quarreling and idle talk.

(Whoever sees) himself in a bathhouse, or someone else sees him there:

(If he sees) something in it, he is in the Fire and its scalding water, because Hell has descending levels and various gates, and in it are scalding water and bitter cold.

(If) a sick person sees that: if he sees that he left the hot room for the freezing room, and his illness in waking life is from heat, it will leave him; and if he washes or comes out of it, he will come out sound. If his illness is from cold, it will increase — or lighten for him. If, along with that, he washes and puts on a white garment contrary to his habit and rides a mount unsuited to him, that is his (funeral) washing. If that happens in winter, paralysis is feared for him.

(If he sees) that he is entering the hot room, the reasoning runs opposite to what was said about leaving. The middle room, for a sick person who sits in it, signifies his being midway in his illness until he enters it more deeply or comes out of it — whether in his earnings or his poverty. If he is not sick and has a dispute or a need at the house of a judge or ruler, the judgment will be for or against him according to what befell him in the bathhouse of intense heat or cold, slipping or splashing. If none of that applies and the man is unmarried, he will marry, or attend a wedding feast or a funeral in which there will be clamor, uproar, sorrows and worries like those in the bathhouse; otherwise, he will be struck by distress on account of women. These may combine, so that he is struck by distress over worldly wealth before a judge, because of the flowing of water and sweat in it, which are wealth. Sweat in particular may signify worry, toil and illness together with the gloom and heat of the bathhouse. If he is stripped of his clothes, the matter concerns his wife, and happens because of her and from her side and her family's side, as the bathhouse indicates. If he is in his clothes, the matter comes from an unrelated party, or from one of his close female relatives (mahram) such as his mother, daughter or sister.

(Whoever sees) that he entered the bathhouse through a channel or a small opening in its door, or that a lion, beasts of prey, wild animals, crows or snakes were with him, it is a woman whom he visits under suspicion, at whose house evil and immoral people gather. The bathhouse also signifies a house of learning, a frontier hostel (ribat), the congregational mosque, and the market, which is the place of earning and loss; it signifies the pilgrimage season; and it signifies repentance for the sinner, guidance for the one astray, wealth for the poor and healing for the sick. It may signify the ruler's palace, because of the punishment, stripping, baring of heads and taking of money that happen there. It may also signify the sea and the money-changers' market. If a sick person enters it and washes with what suits him, it signifies the departure of his illness; if he uses unsuitable water there, it signifies worry, trouble and increased illness. If a healthy person washes there and cleans himself, he will gain knowledge by which he is guided, or pay off his debt, or God will accept his repentance for what he has been committing; if he is unmarried, he will marry; if he is poor, he will become rich.

(If he sees) a dead person in the bathhouse wearing fine clothing or with a pleasant scent, it signifies that God Almighty has pardoned and forgiven him.

(Whoever sees) himself in daytime with stars surrounding him or over his head, it signifies that he will enter a bathhouse. If in his dream he finds intense heat or intense cold, he will suffer hardship in the bathhouse he enters, for bathhouses are like visible stars (because of their skylights). If women mix with men in the bathhouse, it signifies disordered conditions, the breaking of customs, and falling into innovations and doubtful matters.

(If he sees) the bathhouse water turn into blood while people splash it on their bodies, it signifies the king's injustice to them in their wealth, or the scholars' unfairness to the common people in declaring forbidden things permissible — such as breaking the fast on a fast day, fasting on the Day of Doubt, standing at Arafah on other than its day, praying the Friday prayer before noon, and the like. The bathhouse may also signify a church, because it is a haunt of jinn, devils and various images. The basins of the bathhouse are the followers of whatever the bathhouse represents. For an unmarried man, the bathhouse may signify a wife, and its basins her children, her family or her wealth. Whoever takes the bathhouse as his dwelling persists in sins. Whoever enters a bathhouse, washes and comes out will come out of the worry of a woman or a debt. Whoever sings in the bathhouse will say words to which he hears an answer (an echo). A dark bathhouse is a prison, and the bathhouse's water tank is a woman in whom there is no good, because of its nearness to the fire.
