The Sun شمس

The sun in a dream is the supreme king, or the caliph, or the father, or gold, or one of the princes, or a beautiful woman. Whoever sees in his dream that he turned into the sun will attain dominion in proportion to its rays. If he sees that he is hanging onto it, he will gain strength and good from a minister or a secretary. If he finds a sun hanging from a chain, he will be given a governorship and will rule it justly. If he sits in the sun and draws near to it, he will gain from a king favor, wealth, strength and support. If its rays shine from the east to the west, he will rule what lies between them, if he is fit for that, and he will be granted knowledge for which he is mentioned in east and west. If he sees that he owns the sun or has taken hold of it, his word will be accepted by the supreme king. If he sees it clear and shining, having risen over him: if he is a governor, he will gain strength in his governorship from the supreme king; if he is a commander, he will live under his protection; if he is a subject, he will gain lawful provision; and if it is a woman, she will receive from her husband what delights her. If the sun rises in his room, he will gain a share of authority and the caliph will keep in touch with him, if he is fit for that; otherwise, let him beware of a man who holds him dear. If it rises in his room, he will marry. If a woman sees it, she will marry and her worldly life will become ample. If a merchant sees it, he will profit in his trade. The light of the sun is the king's majesty and justice. If he sees that the sun spoke to him, he will attain elevation through the caliph, and likewise the moon; but if they both speak to him and he goes off with them, he will die. If he sees the sun over one place and not another, and he is a man of war, he will be distinguished in war; otherwise, it is recognition that will come to him. If he sees that the sun rose over his head but not his body, he will attain a great matter or an all-encompassing worldly fortune. If it rises over his feet but not his body, he will gain abundant crops of his food and their fruits, and lawful worldly fortune will become ample for him. If he sees that it rose over his belly beneath his clothes, without people knowing, he will be afflicted with leprosy (vitiligo). If it dawns on his chest but not his body, he will fall ill. If a person sees that his belly split open and the sun rose in it, he will die. Likewise, whoever sees the sun set completely while he is behind it following it will die; and if he goes after it, walking, and it has not fully set, he will be taken captive. If he sees that the sun turned into a middle-aged man, the caliph will humble himself before God Almighty, act justly and gain strength; the fortune of the Muslims will grow strong, their affairs will improve, (the enemy's) army will be broken and the enemies of the Muslims will perish. If it turned into a young man, he will grow feeble and the condition of the Muslims will weaken. If he sees fire come out of the sun and burn stars around it, the king will expel his entourage. If he sees the sun turn red, it is corruption in his kingdom; if it turned yellow, he will fall ill; if it turned black, he will be overcome. If he sees that it set, the matter he seeks, good or bad, has ended and reached its conclusion. If he sees the sun in different courses, its positions signify rebels rising against the supreme king from various places. If he sees that he contended with the sun, a rebel will rise against the king, if he (the dreamer) is fit for that; and if he is not fit, his affair will turn against him. If he betrays the sun, he will betray the king or oppose him in his affairs. If he sees the sun without rays, the king's majesty will diminish in proportion to what is lacking of its rays. If he sees that its rays do not fall on him: if he is a ruler, the king's majesty will be stripped from him; if he is a commander, his prestige will go; if he is a governor, he will be dismissed; if he is a subject, his means of livelihood will go; and if it is a woman, a man will marry her and not provide for her.

If he sees the sun split into two halves, one half remaining and the other half moving away until it was opposite it, and both halves have light and rays, a rebel will rise against him (the king) and rule as much as the king rules. If the remaining half goes to the half that moved away and it becomes a whole sun again as it was, his kingdom will go, the rebel will take over from him and rule as much as he ruled. If the half that moved away returns to the remaining half and it becomes a whole sun again, the kingdom will return to him, he will take back his dominion and rule as much as he used to rule. If each half becomes a sun, one of his commanders will rise against him and rule as much as he used to rule. If he sees that the sun fell, it is a calamity concerning the guardian of the land; if it fell to the ground, his father will die. Whoever sees the sun and is looking at its light and brightness will attain dominion, if he is fit for that, or become a chief in his neighborhood and household. If he sees it shining in his land: if he is a traveler, he will return home safely. If he sees the sun rise in the east with clear light and set likewise, it signifies good for the people of that land, which they will receive at the hands of a king, and they will live a pleasant life. If he sees that the sun rose in the house and lit up the whole house, he will attain honor, dignity, renown, nobility, prestige and rank. Whoever sees that he swallowed the sun will live grieved and sorrowful. If he sees the sun rise from the west, the dreamer will be disgraced among people; if there is a secret between him and someone, it will spread, and a hidden matter may come to light. If he sees that a king swallowed the sun, he (the king) will die. If he sees that the sun changed from its state, civil strife will break out in that land. Whoever sees that he is sitting in the sun will attain abundant blessing and grace descending on him from the sky. If he takes some of the sun's light, he will obtain one of the treasures and great wealth, and God will grant him good. If a person sees the sun rising in the east and setting likewise, it is a sign of good for all people, and it signifies work, because it wakes them from their sleep and moves them to work. For some people it signifies that male children will be born to them; for slaves it signifies that they will be freed; and for everyone else it is a (good) sign. The sun's course, for one who wants to conceal his affair, signifies its exposure, because the sun reveals all things and makes them manifest. If a person sees in his dream that it rises from the west, it signifies the exposure of hidden things, however keen their owner is to hide them. If he is sick, the dream signifies his recovery; if the pain is in his eye, it signifies that he will not go blind; for one on a journey, it signifies his return from his journey, even if his whereabouts are unknown. It is also a sign of good for one who wants to travel toward the west, and likewise if he sees the sun rising from the south toward the north. If a person sees the sun darkened, or its color is the color of blood, or he sees it with an altered appearance, it is a bad sign for all people: for some it signifies unemployment, and for others the illness of the dreamer's child, or a hardship befalling him, or pain in the eyes; but for one who wants to conceal his affair, it is a favorable sign. If he sees the sun come down into his bed and threaten him, it signifies severe illness and inflammation of the body; if he sees it doing him good, it signifies fertility and ease, and for many people it signifies health. Whoever sees that the sun has vanished, that is a sign of swift (calamity) for all people, except for one who was doing something in secret; it also often signifies blindness, or the death of the dreamer's children. Whoever sees not one sun but many suns surrounding it, that is a sign of good for travelers and horsemen; but for the sick it is a sign of hardship and death. Whoever sees that the sun gives him something or takes something from him, that is not praiseworthy: its giving signifies hardship, and its taking signifies loss and ruin. Whoever sees that the sun has spread lights over him will accompany the caliph, who will pour his gifts on him. The heat of the sun, when it exceeds the limit and strikes him, means worry will come to him from a ruler. If he sees that he is fleeing from the sun, he will flee from his wife, or from a ruler, or from something hateful. Whoever sees the sun come out of his male organ will be granted a son who will become a king or a minister. Whoever sees the sun and the moon joined together in their radiance and light, it signifies marriage to a beautiful woman. The sun rising from the west signifies the king; it is also said, the dreamer's disgrace; it is also said, his repentance; it is also said, the nearness of his appointed time (death); it is also said, an event on earth; and for a sick person it signifies health. If he sees clouds or something else cover the sun until its light is gone, something will befall the king, an illness or a change in his state; if he sees the clouds clear away from it, the worry, illness and change will leave the king. Whoever sees that he walks only in the sun will travel. The sun, when it rises over the earth (scorching it), is a sign of drought and burning. Whoever sees ten suns that he took and put in a rag will obtain ten thousand dirhams. The sun may be knowledge by which one is guided. It is also said that the sun being veiled by clouds signifies the king's removal because of injustice done among his subjects.

The sun may signify the dreamer's authority, such as his prince, his overseer, his master teacher and his father — or her husband, if it is a woman. The sun may signify a noble woman, such as the wife of the king, the chief or the master, or his daughter or mother; or the dreamer's wife, mother, daughter, maternal aunt, stepmother or grandmother. Whatever event is seen in the sun, its interpretation reverts to whichever of these people it represents. Whoever sees the sun fallen to the earth, or swallowed by a bird, or fallen into the sea, or burned by fire, or its disc gone and blackened, or setting outside its course in the sky, or entering the Daughters of the Bier (the Big Dipper), the one associated with it among those we mentioned will die. If he sees an eclipse in it, or clouds covering it, or dust or smoke piled on it until its light diminished, or it is seen swaying in the sky without settling, that is a sign of something befalling the one associated with it: illness, worry, grief, distress or alarming news. If the one it represents is sick in waking life, it signifies his death. If he sees it blackened without cause or eclipse, that is a sign of the injustice and tyranny of the one associated with it, or of his unbelief or going astray. If he takes it in his palm, holds it in his lap, or it descends on him in his house with its light and radiance, he will be firmly established in his authority and the might of his dominion, if he is one suited to that; or the master of that house will return if he is absent — whether it is his son, his slave or his wife who sees that, for he is the authority of them all and the guardian of the house; otherwise, his wife or slave woman, if she is pregnant by him, will give birth to a girl or a boy. If he sees it rising from the west, or returning after it set, or going back to the place from which it rose, a sign and a lesson will appear. That may signify the one associated with it turning back from what he hoped for, whether a journey, justice or tyranny. It may signify that the one associated with it will be struck by illness. Its setting after rising may signify, for one who has a pregnancy, the death of the fetus after it has shown. It may signify the return of an absent person from a journey with marvelous wealth. Its setting may signify the return of a prisoner to prison after his release; and it may signify that one who embraced Islam from unbelief, or repented of his injustice, will return to his error. If one's wife was brought to him that night (in marriage) or he bought a slave girl, the wife will return to her family and the slave girl will go back to her seller. Its rising after its setting may signify, for one who divorced his wife, taking her back; for one who has a pregnant woman, her safe delivery; for one whose livelihood or craft has stalled, its revival — especially if its success depends on the sun, such as a cloth bleacher, a honey seller, a brick maker and the like. For one who is sick, it signifies his death. For one in jihad or war, it signifies victory, because the sun was turned back for Joshua son of Nun (peace be upon him) in his battle with the enemies until God gave him victory over them.

(Whoever sees) that he is following the sun as he walks and it has not set will be a captive along with the king. Whoever feels cold in the shade and sits in the sun, his poverty will go, because cold is poverty. Whoever gets hold of the sun while it is black and dark, the king will become dependent on him in some matter. Whoever sees the sun, the moon and the stars gathered in one place and owns them, and they have light and rays, his word will be accepted by the king, the minister and the chiefs; if they have no light, there is no good in it for the dreamer. If he sees the sun and the moon rising over him, his parents are pleased with him; if they have no rays, they are angry with him. If he sees a sun and a moon on his right and left, or in front of him and behind him, he will be struck by worry and fear, or an affliction, or a defeat in which he is forced to flee. The blackening and dimming of the sun, the moon and the stars is a change in the world. Whoever sees two suns clash, they are two kings who will fight each other. Whoever sees that he prostrated to the sun or the moon will commit a grave sin and a great crime. Whoever sees the sun's rays coming out of him will attain authority and power. Whoever sees the sun among the stars, overpowering them and ahead of them, will overpower his enemies and grow strong against them, his fortune will improve and his wealth increase. Seeing the sun may signify provisions, livelihood, guidance, following the manifest truth, splendid garments, and recovery from illnesses for one who sits in it or owns it in wintertime; and it signifies worries, troubles, poverty and illnesses for one who sits in it or owns it in summertime. It may signify travel toward where it rises or sets. Seeing it in its place of exaltation (in astrology) is high standing and elevation; seeing it in its place of descent is a sign of poverty, loss, worries and troubles. Many suns are innovations, fear and slackness in livelihood, and likewise many moons. Many suns (shumus) may signify a mount that is ridden, such as a restive (shamus) animal that resists its rider. Suns signify a gathering of beautiful faces. The sun may signify one named after it, such as Shams al-Din, just as the full moon (badr) signifies Badr al-Din. If the suns multiply and faces do not grow brighter, people of standing will agree on the common good; if the light increases until eyes are dazzled, self-interests will multiply and the common good will be lost. If he eats the sun, he will profit from serving it and managing it and gain great wealth from that; he may become an astronomer, or a muezzin who knows the course of the sun, hoping for benefit because of it. If the sun burns him, he will perish in love for a beautiful face, or a calamity will strike him through the one the sun represents; it may also signify the corruption of his belief, or that he makes a vow to do something sinful. A woman carrying the sun is a husband, or a beautiful child she will be granted. If the sun speaks to him in intelligible words, he will learn the knowledge of summoning jinn, correspond with great men, or become an interpreter. Seeing the sun, the moon and the stars is a sign of affliction, or prison, or envy from family, after which the outcome will be dominion, or he will attain a good outcome in his religion, by analogy with the story of Joseph (peace be upon him); it may also signify fear and hardship. Seeing the sun signifies a lamp, as God Almighty says:

وَجَعَلَ ٱلْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًا

“And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?”

Quran 71:16 · Saheeh International

The sun rising from the west is a sign of fear and anxiety, of the ruler's domination over his subjects, and of retreating from the enemy. It may signify the return of an absent person from where he traveled, distressed, sorrowful and at a loss. It also signifies apostasy from religion and the wickedness of those who had repented, and it signifies faith under compulsion. Whoever sees that the sun burned crops or gardens, or that its heat harmed people, it signifies diseases and plague, or injustice from great men, or disasters and high food prices. If there are (many) suns in the sky harming people, they are unjust people and men of evil; if their light benefits people, they are men of justice, profit and trade. This may also concern crops, fruits and everything that needs the sun.
