The sea in a dream signifies a powerful, awe-inspiring, revered king who is just and compassionate and whom all creatures need. For a merchant, the sea is his merchandise; for a hired worker, it is his master.
Whoever sees the sea will obtain something he was hoping for.
Whoever sees that he waded into it will come before a king of this description.
Whoever sees that he is sitting or lying on the surface of the sea will enter the king's service and will be wary of him, because water cannot be trusted not to drown one, and likewise the ruler's anger cannot be trusted. If he drinks all of its water, and only a great king would see this, he will rule the world and live long, or he will obtain a third of the king's wealth or the like of his authority, or will be his equal in his kingdom. If he drinks of it until he quenches his thirst, he will receive from the king wealth that makes him rich, along with long life and strength. If he draws water from it, he will seek an office from the king and will obtain it in proportion to what he drew. If he pours it into a vessel, he will acquire much wealth, or God Most High will grant him a reign of fortune in which he gathers wealth; such a reign is stronger, wider and more lasting than the sea, because it is a gift from God Most High. It is also said that whoever drinks from the water of the sea will learn refinement and learning in proportion to what he drank. If he crosses the sea, he will take an enemy's wealth as spoils, like the Children of Israel who, when they crossed the sea, took the wealth of Pharaoh as spoils. If he sees the water of the sea enter a neighborhood without its people being harmed by it, a ruler will enter that place and its people will obtain wealth and livelihood from him. If he bathes in it, his sins will be expiated and his worry about the king will go away. If he sees it in a distant place without mingling with it, something he had been hoping for will come near to him. If he drinks from it and has a partner, he will part from him. Whoever urinates in the sea persists in sins.
Whoever sees the sea from afar will see terror, strife and affliction. Some said: he will fall into a calamity and trials will descend upon him.
Whoever sees that the water of the sea has sunk until both its shores appeared, it is an affliction descending on the land from the caliph or the public treasury, or a drought in the lands.
Whoever sees the sea and stands by it will obtain something from the ruler that he did not expect.
Whoever sees the sea diminished until it became a gulf, the ruler will weaken and leave those lands from which the sea receded, and only good will reach the people.
Whoever sees that he is entering upon a ruler or a man of authority, if he is sick, his illness will worsen.
Whoever sees that he entered a sea and then came out of it will receive a reward from the ruler, and the worry coming from him will go away.
Whoever sees that he is coming out of a sea he was swimming in, if he is sick God Most High will heal him, and if he is in distress because of the ruler or someone else, God will relieve him.
Whoever sees that he crossed a sea to the other side will get through a worry, a fear or a terror and come out safe from it.
Whoever sees the sea overwhelm him will be struck by an overpowering distress, especially if its water is murky or he got mud from its bottom.
Whoever sees that he is swimming in a sea is struggling to get out of a matter he is in; his swimming and the time it takes will correspond to how hard or easy the swimming was and how near or far he was from the shore. If he gets out by that swimming, it will not be long before he gets out of the matter he is in.
Whoever sees that he went into a sea swimming until he could no longer be seen, that is his ruin and his end.
Whoever sees that the water covered him until he died in it, or sees that he died, will die a martyr, because one who drowns is a martyr. It is also said: he will die with many sins.
Whoever sees that he drowned in the sea, rising up on the water and sinking, yet did not die in it, will be drowned in worldly matters, and perhaps he will obtain a blessing from them, and perhaps he has many sins and transgressions.
Whoever sees that he is diving in the sea for pearls and the like is seeking wealth or something similar, and will gain from it in proportion to the pearls or other things he obtained.
Whoever sees that he is scooping water from a sea and pouring it into an anchored ship until he fills it will have a son born to him who will live long.
Whoever sees that he took water from the sea and drank it will obtain wealth from his ruler, or will gather knowledge, in proportion to the water he drinks; if it is murky, he will be struck by fear.
Whoever sees that he bathed or performed ablution from the sea: if he is sick, God Most High will heal him; if he is in debt, God will pay off his debt; if he has a worry, God will relieve his worry; if he is afraid, he will be safe from what he fears; and if he is in prison, he will come out of it to something good.
Whoever sees that he is walking on the water in a sea, it signifies his good intention and the soundness of his certainty. The sea may also signify turbulent, destructive strife, and it signifies Hell.
Whoever sees someone in it: if that person is dead, he is in the Fire; if he is sick, his illness will worsen, and if he drowns, he will die of his illness. It is said that walking on water signifies the uncovering of a hidden matter; it is also said that it signifies risk and reliance on God; and it may signify that the dreamer bears much and conceals deceit. Seeing the encircling ocean in a dream is a sign of the end of one's life span and of connection with the world of the unseen and the seen, along with a long life. The sea signifies travel and war, and the animals and wealth that come from it. A fresh-water sea is a believer and a salt sea is an unbeliever. The sea may signify rain from the sky. The sea may signify glorifying God and declaring His oneness, because when a person sees it, he glorifies God Most High, declares His oneness and proclaims His greatness. The sea may signify fear, anxiety and slowness in reaching one's goals. It may signify the end of worry and trouble. It may signify death, because of the wealth and lives that are lost in it. It may signify purification from impurities, faith for an unbeliever, and repentance for a sinner. It signifies an oath, because God Most High swore by it, saying:
وَٱلْبَحْرِ ٱلْمَسْجُورِ
“And [by] the sea set on fire,”
Quran 52:6 · Saheeh International
It may signify the father and the mother. It signifies a man and a woman of bad character, people of schemes and spite. It may signify prison, because animals are imprisoned in it. It may signify a craft without limit and a city without a wall. Seeing it signifies abandoning congregational prayers and attending the festivals, and an illness that keeps one from eating what one desires. If the sea rises nicely in the dream while people are in need of rain, they will receive rain and benefit from it. If he sees it surging with crashing waves, he will meet with fear and hardship on his journey. Whoever urinates in the sea persists in sins. The sea may also signify this world, its terrors and its wonders.
