Earth (land, ground) أرض

In a dream it has an interpretation, and every land is according to its nature and substance. The land of the Gathering [on the Day of Judgment]: seeing it in a dream points to keeping secrets, wealth after poverty, safety from fear and the fulfillment of a promise. It may indicate a noble, beautiful virgin wife, or a great position with little good fortune, and guidance and repentance. Likewise, if he sees the back of the whale or the bull that carries the earth, and the earth does not change or move, it indicates that the king will depose himself or depose his deputy, while the state of the world does not change.

The floor of a house points to what is spread on it, such as mats, carpets and so on, or to whoever sweeps it and looks after it, or to the family and kin who gather on it; whatever good or corruption is seen in it applies to whoever it points to. As for farmland, it points to its crops, their growth, its fertility, its newness, its plowing implements, its threshing and its farmer; whatever appears on it of usual vegetation, a pleasant smell, flowers, blossoms, irrigation, smoothness, height or roughness applies to those we have mentioned. As for the land of the neighborhood [roads], it indicates journeys for merchants and those who earn their living on them, such as muleteers, camel-drivers and the like: the removal of its obstacles, the pulling up of its stones, and the clarity and straightness of its roads in the dream are a sign of profit for whoever travels on it, the easing of their affairs, the end of their worry, and the speed of their stages. As for a known piece of land, it points to the one who has authority over it by lease, inheritance or digging; whatever lengthening or shortening of its set boundaries happens to it applies to the one with authority over it among those we have mentioned. As for unknown land, it points to the mother, the father, the husband, the wife, the partner, the trustee, and the heiress, and to what one owns, such as a house, a riding animal or a slave-girl, and to what one sits on, such as bedding and the like.

The earth is a talebearing woman who cannot keep a secret. The earth indicates argument, knowledge or eloquence. It indicates this world, while the sky indicates the hereafter. The earth and the sky may indicate two co-wives whom no one can bring together except God the Exalted.

If he sees that the earth split open, it indicates change [or: substitution] and the open display of forbidden and evil things; its splitting may also indicate its fertility through growth and blessing. The earth lengthening and stretching beyond its usual extent is a sign of the release of the prisoner and the delivery of the pregnant woman, and its stretching beyond its usual extent is provision. If he sees that he owns a barren land, he will marry a poor or a barren woman, because barren land is land empty of vegetation. The earth may indicate a possession held by the ruler, or death, life and provision, and whoever works on it. That is, [if he sees] that he owns land: he will marry if unmarried, be granted a child, enter into partnership, entrust someone with his money and his secret, receive an inheritance, rent or buy a house, buy a riding animal or a slave-girl, or buy grape-juice, each person according to his standing and what befits him; and if kingship befits him, [he will attain it]. If the dreamer is sick, he will recover from his illness and get up to [tend] his land and his provision. If the land is spacious and pleasant to look at, his work on it will be good; and if there are carcasses, decayed bones or filth on it, what he does on it will be worthless.

If the earth speaks to him, or he hears from it speech he does not understand, it indicates hardship, alarming rumors and the tearing away of veils [exposure]. If he sees that the earth quaked with him, that may indicate a pregnant woman giving birth to her fetus. If he sees the earth swallow up those on it, it indicates arrogance, vanity and heedlessness of obedience to God the Exalted. If the earth is folded up from beneath him, it indicates the end of his work, the divorce of his wife, or the loss of his position. If the earth turns into pits, iron or stone, his wife's conceiving may become difficult, or he may move to a trade other than his own; or he may be granted wealth from his earnings or find a mine. If he sees land in a dream, his standing among people will rise, or he will devote himself to spiritual discipline and the breaking of the ego. If he carries the earth and does not find it heavy, it indicates that he wrongs others in their land and will have it hung around his neck [on the Day of Judgment], or that he will become a tyrant who stirs up the earth and carries it on his shoulder, and is helped in that; he may become a town-dweller or a leather-worker. If he eats earth, it indicates that he will obtain the benefit of his labor on it, or that benefit will come back to him from what he planted on it; or he may sell what he sits on, rides or treads on and eat its price. If he sees that the earth split open and swallowed him, it indicates shame and the means [to his ends] becoming difficult; he may travel and be imprisoned, or become indebted to someone's favor. Whoever sees that he is in a wide, level land he does not know, resembling a desert, will travel soon.

Whoever sees that he is sitting on the ground will gain control over it and rise above it.

Whoever sees that he is striking the ground with his hand or with something will travel for trade.

Whoever sees that he is eating from the earth will obtain wealth in proportion to what he ate of it.

Whoever sees that he went out of a barren land into a fertile land will move from innovation to the Sunna; and if he went out of a fertile land into a barren one, it is the opposite. If one who hopes to travel sees that he is going out from one land to another, he will travel, and his condition on his journey will be according to the condition of that land in spaciousness or narrowness, fertility or barrenness. If the governor of a town sees that, he will be dismissed from it; and if he has a slave-girl, he will sell her, or a wife, he will divorce her or marry another in addition to her.

Whoever sees that he sold a piece of land and left it for another: if he is sick, he will die; and if he is rich, he will become poor.

Whoever sees that he slipped on the ground, or is shaking dust off his hand, will become poor; and if he is sick, he will die and go into the dust. Whoever sees that he is disappearing into the earth and sees no pit there, that is a journey in pursuit of worldly things, and he will die on it.

Whoever sees that the earth was folded up for him [i.e. distances shortened] will die soon.

Whoever sees that it was rolled up [stretched out] for him, it is the length of his life.

Whoever sees that the earth swallowed him and caved in with him: if he is one of the people of evil, it is a punishment that will befall him, or a distant journey, or it is feared that he will not be hoped for [i.e. not return].

Whoever sees that the earth swallowed him without caving in will travel a distant journey.

Whoever sees that the earth quaked and was struck by a cave-in, that is an affliction that will befall that land from its ruler, or heat, cold, drought or severe fear.

Whoever sees that the earth split open and a beast came out of it speaking to people will see something that amazes him; it may indicate the nearness of his death; or it may be a great, general sign appearing to people so that they may take heed. The earth indicates this world for whoever owns it, according to its extent and greatness or narrowness and smallness. A known land indicates the city he is in, its people and its inhabitants. If he sees as if the earth split open and a young man came out of it, enmity will appear among its people; if an old man came out, their fortune will be happy and they will attain fertility. If it split open and nothing came out of it and nothing went into it, some evil event will occur in the land. If a beast of prey came out of it, it indicates the appearance of an unjust ruler. If a snake came out of it, it is a lasting punishment in that region. If the earth split open with vegetation, its people will attain fertility. If he sees that he is digging the earth and eating from it, he will obtain wealth through cunning, because digging is cunning. Whoever takes upon himself the folding of the earth with his own hand will attain kingship. It is also said that the folding of the earth is for one who receives an inheritance. The narrowness of the earth is the narrowness of livelihood. Whoever the earth speaks to with good will obtain [good] in this world and in religion; and whoever it speaks to with words of rebuke, let him fear God, for it is unlawful wealth. If he sees a quarter or a land folded up over people, death or fighting will occur there in which people die in proportion to how much was folded over them, or narrowness, drought or hardship will befall them.
