Dream meaning · al-Nabulsi

Lute (barbat) بربط

In a dream it is fabricated speech, because the strings give out something like speech but it is not speech, unless the dreamer is a man of religion and piety, in which case it is good praise. For one who sees that he is playing it and is not a man of religion, the lute may be bad praise of himself, and he is lying. The lute in a dream is the amusement of this world and its falsehood, and lying words fabricated by its player and its listener. It is also said that plucking it indicates a king or a noble who has been unsettled from his kingdom and honor, so that whenever he remembers his kingdom his guts are wrenched. For a respectable person it is greatness through which he accomplishes things; for a dissolute person, his corrupting people with something that afflicts their guts; and for a tyrant, his oppressing people with it, cutting their guts [the strings are made of gut]. Whoever sees that a lute is being played in his home, it is a calamity; and its player is a man who is the chief of the people of falsehood among people of importance.

Whoever sees that he is playing something at the imam's [ruler's] gate from among instruments of amusement other than pipes and dancing, such as the oud, the tanbur and the like, will attain office and authority if he is worthy of it; otherwise he will fabricate speech.

Whoever sees that he is playing a lute or a string will be struck by some kind of sorrow; and if he plays it and its strings do not break, he will suffer grief. The lute indicates people's whims and falsehoods. If he sees that along with the lute there is a pipe or a drum, or play in the form of dancing, it is a calamity that will strike the people of that place, because the pipe and the drum are a calamity and weeping in all cases.
