Seeing him in a dream indicates, for those in grief, joys over their grief. For one who hopes for a hidden matter, his wish will be fulfilled. Whoever hopes for news of an absent person, a messenger will come to him from that person. Seeing him may indicate knowledge of symbols, solving difficulties and bringing hidden things to light; and the tracker who follows footprints; and the scholar versed in matters of the Sacred Law. He may indicate one who sincerely advises his companion and is solicitous for him, and he may indicate one who does not keep a secret. The interpreter indicates the judge, the jurist, the physician and everyone with whom people grieve and rejoice. He may indicate the mosque and the Quran reciter, because he is a bearer of good tidings and a warner. He may indicate the weigher and everyone who works with scales and weights, such as the assayer and the money-changer. He may indicate the fuller, the washerman, the barber [literally ‘hair-cutter’], and everyone at whose hands people's worries are consoled. He may indicate the reader of letters and of royal registers arriving from other lands. Whoever becomes an interpreter: if the judgeship suits him, he will attain it; if he is a seeker of knowledge and of the Quran, he will memorize it; if he wants to be a scribe, he will attain it; if his aim is the science of medicine, he will learn it; otherwise he will become a money-changer, a fuller, a washerman, a barber or a reciter. The interpreter may indicate the official in charge of investigations for the judge, because he searches out people's faults. Whoever tells his dream within the dream to an interpreter, whatever he interprets for him is what accords with wisdom and conforms to the Sunna. If he does not understand his question or comprehend his expression, perhaps he needs one of those whom the interpreter indicates in his craft, and he will go to him for his need. Some said: the interpreter is a man who seeks out people's slips.
