Beating with whips in a dream is evil talk; if blood flows from it onto the ground, it is a loss of wealth. Beating with a short whip (durra) is reviving a dead matter and clarifying a difficult problem. Striking with the sword is a sign of victory over enemies and refuting their argument: if his sword cuts, his argument will stand; and if his sword does not cut, his enemy's argument will prevail. Being beaten on the flanks is (his exposure) among his family and relatives; he may do something that warrants beating on his flanks, so that he becomes like one who beats himself; or he may fall ill with pleurisy, or be made miserable by someone he used to carry at his side. Beating is good and kindness that the one beaten receives at the hands of the beater, unless he sees him beating him with wood, in which case he will promise him something, lie to him about it and not fulfill it for him. If a king beats with wood, let him beware of his side. If he sees that a king is beating him, the king will clothe him; if he beats him on his back, he will pay off his debt; and if he beats him on his buttocks, he will marry him off. Striking (darb) is (making) comparisons (as in darb al-mathal, 'striking a parable'), and striking is also admonition. Whoever sees that he is striking a man on the crown of his head with a whip, and it twists on his head and leaves its mark on him, wants the removal of his chief. If he strikes him on his eyelid, he wants to violate his religion. If he plucks out his eyelashes, he wants heretical innovation from him. If he strikes him on his skull, he will reach the utmost in interpretation (in making his point) and the striker will obtain his wish. Relate each limb to its nature. Striking is supplication: whoever sees that he is beating a donkey he is riding is a man who does not eat until he has supplicated to God Almighty and asked of Him. If he sees that he struck a man, he will curse him (pray against him). If he strikes him while he is uncovered, it is evil talk by which he will be mentioned and which he cannot refute. If he sees that he is beating someone not under his authority, it is a bad sign and indicates a loss that will befall him. If he sees that he is the one being beaten, it is a sign of good, as long as the one beating him is not an angel, a dead person or someone under his authority, but someone other than these. It is always best for a person to see that he is being beaten with a stick or by hand. Beating with a leather strap is a bad sign, because it is made of hide; likewise beating with a reed, because of the reed's creaking. If he sees that he is beating someone else, that is more beneficial to him than someone else beating him. It is also said that beating and flogging are interpreted as the beater teaching the one beaten good manners; and if he does not see blood flowing, it is interpreted as the sparing of blood and safety for the one beaten from the beater. Beating in a dream is travel (darb fi al-ard, 'striking out in the land').
(Whoever sees) that he is striking the ground will travel. If he is flogged forty lashes, it is for wine; and if he is flogged eighty lashes, it is for slandering chaste women. A mudaraba (literally 'mutual striking') is a business partnership.
(Whoever sees) a dead person beating him while the dead person is angry, the one beaten has committed a sin or resolved to, because the dead person is in the abode of truth and is pleased only with what pleases God, and is occupied with no falsehood. A living person beating a dead person is strength of condition in his religion, in prayer, pilgrimage or zakat; this is if the dead person is content with the beating and submissive to what the beater does.
(Whoever sees) a dead person beating him will obtain good from a journey; and if something of his had been lost, it will return to him. It is also said that whoever is beaten by a dead person will pay off his debt. Striking the ground is travel. Beating a person without scratching or pain is clothing, if that is in winter; otherwise it is wounding words. Beating an animal that deserves it is discipline, and beating an animal that does not deserve it is ignorance and transgression.
