In a dream they are worry and sorrow. A green herb is men related by marriage (in-laws). Whoever sees that he gathered a bunch of greens from his garden, something is being plotted against him, so let him beware of evil. If he knows its kind, it then goes back to [the interpretation of] its nature. Dry greens are wealth through which riches are put right. A herb growing [in a place] is a man: if its place is one where such growth is considered unseemly, it is a man who has come in upon the people of that place through marriage or partnership. Some said that all herbs are good; some said that all herbs are disliked; and some said that all herbs indicate trade, men, sorrow, a child and wealth: if they indicate trade, it is trade that does not last; if they indicate men, they are soldiers who do not last; if they indicate a child and wealth, neither will last; and if they indicate sorrow, it is sorrow that does not last. Whoever exchanges manna and quails for herbs and garlic will suffer humiliation and poverty. If he sees that he exchanged herbs for something good, he will be saved from poverty and humiliation.
Whoever sees as if he ate cooked greens will obtain good and benefit from everything, joy, happiness and standing, and will have profit in everything. The Yemeni herb is a man, if its place is unseemly; and likewise every plant [that grows in] a house, a residence or a mosque where its growth is considered unseemly. Purslane, the "foolish herb" (al-baqla al-hamqa'), points to wishing for what one cannot attain.
